For more general information about our Type 4 cylinder head product line please see the "General cylinder head information pages". Frequently asked questions about these heads, answered: The 7424 IS compatible with stock D and L Jetronic EFI systems when used on engines up to,, but not exceeding 2056cc. The 7424 WILL NOT work well with otherwise 100% stock engines. The 7424 Does NOT work well with stock camshafts. The 7424 is NOT available for original 1700cc engines that have RETAINED THEIR 90mm bore size. The 7424 will also bolt onto 2056cc engines with their 96mm bore size and was originally designed to work best with our 2056cc engines. The 7424 is NOT recommended for engines larger than 2270cc that need to make power past 5,500 RPM. The 7424 has benefited from valve seat upgrades to eliminate dropped valve seats and related issues. The 7424 does NOT utilize the stock head gaskets as original. These heads are set up to eliminate issues with these gaskets, per the VW Bulletin released in 1981. The 7424 is our choice for the famous Camper Special engines that are RAT developed and offer serious drive-ability for 72-79 VS Buses The 7424 cylinder head is one of only two of our original head designs that have remained through the "New Generation" changes in our cylinder head program. This is due in part to the fact that this head is less labor intense and over the years it has provided excellent reliability and performance for our smaller displacement engines, especially the 2056 and our "Powerstroke" Bay window Bus combination, therefore a change to this member of our cylinder head product line was not needed. The 7424 would be considered ted cylinder head for engines of 2056cc- low RPM 2270 engines. The 7424 is right at home on our "Powerstroke" Bus engines and our 2056cc engine kits. A variant of this head is used on our standard 2270 engine kit as well as our "2270 Daily Driver" turn key engine combination from our engine division. The 7424 features slightly modified intake and exhaust ports that benefit from "Bowl cuts" under their valve seats to help with port flow. The ports are then slightly cleaned up by hand, the result is a great flowing cylinder head for "Medium performance engines. The 7424 is also my choice for some "Camper Special" engines that see high speeds on the freeway and don't hit the mountains very often, this is due to the added flow and the ability to shed some extra heat over the 7416 heads through the modified exhaust ports. The 7424 is the best arrangement for applications where port velocity is still a key ingredient to the engine's power band, this is very important for 2056cc engines and the "Powerstroke" combination. I have utilized these heads with 2056cc engines and coupled them to a RAT 9130 camshaft and made power to 6,500 RPM and squeezed 130HP from the engine that was destined for a Porsche 914. I have used the same heads with a RAT 9500 camshaft to make 140HP from a Daily Driver 2270 that was a great power maker to 5,500 RPM. This head arrangement coupled to a RAT 9550 camshaft pulls like mad in a "Powerstroke" Bus combination as well! As you can see these heads have a vast amount of uses and have been used on a variety of our engines throughout the years. this is because they work very well! As with all of our cylinder heads the 7424 receives the best components and labor that can be supplied. All our cylinder heads feature updated valve seats, guides, springs and retainers and are sold 100% complete and ready to install onto your Type 4 engine. Please note that rocker arm assemblies and valve covers are not supplied with our cylinder heads, but they are available separately through our retail store. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Technical specifications for the RAT 7424 cylinder heads: Head casting type- NEW 1.8/ 2.0L Bus castings Combustion chamber shape- 1.8/ 2.0L bus, non modified Combustion chamber volume- 50cc+/- for 2.0 castings, 55cc +/- for 1.8 castings Spark plug location- original 1.7/ 1.8/ 2.0 location, plugs are NOT relocated as with some of our "Leading edge" offerings.
