TYPE IV CONVERSION KIT PREP
AND INSTALL FOR DTM SHROUD

INSTALLATION-PLEASE READ BEFORE STARTING CONVERSION!
The following is a suggested method. It is assumed the person/s carrying out this procedure is a qualified mechanic.

  1. Long Block Prep
    1. Remove and save oil cooler studs (3)
    2. Drill and ream 14mm upper left bell housing mounting hole. Press in Type I serrated nut*
    3. Drill out bail holes (pivots) in breather tower with 3/8" drill. Install threaded block.
    4. Remove old blower housing studs (4).
    5. Remove stud at oil filter opening on block. (TYPE IV ONLY!)
  2. Trial Install Long Block
    1. Remove any obstructions that prevent installation
    2. Check for proper adaptation of engine to transaxle.
    3. Remove long block. Install padded trans (front) restraint strap. Freshen rubber mounts if necessary.
  3. Install Shroud (Long Block Out)
    1. Remove 1st and 3rd long bolts from top of block.
    2. Remove any excess metal flashing from top of block.
    3. Install shroud brace with air separator pointing toward right head. Use two long SAE bolts.
    4. Position shroud on block with upright parts of brace inside the shroud. Line up mounting holes.
    5. Trial fit intake manifolds. Variations due to different manufacturers may require trimming. Cover area to be trimmed with masking tape. Slide manifold on studs and draw outline on tape with a pen. To trim, use a 3/4:" x ¾" rotary rubber drum sander (Dremel). A breathing mask and eye protection are well advised.
    6. Place shroud on block. Install two long SAE bolts, washers on outside, steel tubes inside, bolt heads towards flywheel. Install short bold, head towards flywheel. Install oil cooler air housing, all bolt heads towards flywheel, washers on both sides. Install air hose to oil cooler air housing, leave other end free. Keep air separator just below fan opening.
  4. Oil Cooling
    1. Fold sharp edges of cooler down on all four corners or grind them off. In a direct hook-up of engine block to oil cooler, two-36" (914 mm) oil lines are required. Install adapter on block with flat gasket. Install second adapter (without 90 degree fittings) on oil cooler with old studs and rubber "O" rings. Shorten stock dipstick ¾" (19 mm) on end. Slide oil cooler into oil cooler air housing. Add retainer spring through top opening.
  5. Installation
    1. If an in-car installation, add front air sealing tin (two pieces) with tab bolted to top block bolt, (top center on bell housing). Install engine. Reach through shroud opening to tighten upper right nut. Install carbs and manifolds as one unit. Add adapters to carb towers to extend position of cross shaft (Delorto). Install dipstick adapter. Install front pulley with stock spacer on crank blower flange (three 8 x 1.25 bolts). Prep gen/alt support with #2 permatex (no gasket) prior to installation. Increase Type I fan to backing plate distance to .220 (5.6mm). Fan must be 1971 or later. Form mounting strap over alternator and bottom casting. Add retaining bolt and leave loose. Install on engine and rotate generator to align with shroud. Add four SAE bolts and washers. Install two bolts through casting and into threaded block. Tighten gen. retaining strap. Add belt, side and rear tin. Note: Ignition coils, fuel pumps and fuel regulators must not be mounted on shroud. Clearancing may be required due to narrow engine opening (early 6 volt), deck lid to generator pulley and upper air tube to right deck lid brace. The new angle on carb down links requires that you re-form the throttle arms to reduce bind during wide-open throttle. (Delorto example) Carburetors with carbon fiber (plastic) linkage are not advised. For in-car air sealing sheet metal install both support brackets behind pulley before installing pulley. For in-car (buggy) installation, upper right belt hole must be closed with capscrew (Access to crankcase).
