A few years ago I embarked on a project to build a
Porsche Speedster replica. I'm one of those people who as a little
kid liked to take everything apart and then put them back together,
just for the fun of it. Building the speedster was not about
shelling out a bunch of money so I could drive this neat looking
car, it was about the fun (and
heartache) of doing as much of the work myself as I could and
learning about engines, transmissions, paint, bodywork, etc, along
the way.
My doner car (a '69 bug) did not have an engine. One option was to
buy a crate motor or rebuild a junkyard engine. The problem was I
could not find anyone who offered a kit to do this. There are
probably kits out there, but getting people to help you put them
together is another story. That's when I found the Aircooled
Technology site and Jake's engine kits.
The price was a little more than I was ready for, but after doing a
bunch of research I decided that Jake's 2056 TIV kit was going to be
the perfect engine for my speedster, and worth the price. At the
time Jake was also ramping up the DTM production and had all the
parts I needed to complete the upright cooling conversion on the TIV.
Jake either had the parts I needed or could tell me where to get
them, and was always happy to help.
In the end it took me almost a year between getting all the parts
together and actually firing up the engine and taking the car for a
drive. There were frustrations, and delays, but in the end the
support and expertise that Jake provided me helped make the entire
project a success.
Thanks Jake!
