LE Stands for "Leading Edge", another mutual development of Hoffman Automotive Machine and Raby's Aircooled Technology! These heads are members are the newest generation of proven cylinder heads for the VW/ Porsche Type 4 engine. All "LE" series heads feature full CNC (computer numerically controlled) machining techniques. The CNC technology enhances repeatability between ports and chambers and therefore boosts efficiency all while reducing overall costs and allowing more performance! If it sounds like a dream, wake up and realize this is reality brought to you by the team at Aircooled Technology!

ALL CYLINDER HEADS BASED FROM 100% NEW HEAD CASTINGS! WE DO NOT "REBUILD" ANY 30 YEAR OLD CYLINDER HEADS! All heads feature our pedigreed "no drop seat" upgrades along with the highest quality valves, springs, retainers, guides and hardware. We literally "Rebuild" brand new cylinder heads to meet our expectations! For more general information about our Type 4 cylinder head product line please see the "General cylinder head information pages".

Frequently asked questions about these heads, answered:

The LE 200 is should be used on medium displacement engines from 2200-2500cc.

The LE 200 is available in bore sizes larger than 96mm. (up to 102mm)

The LE 200 is not compatible with stock D or L Jetronic EFI systems or for engines utilizing plenum based EFI that utilize stock intake runners.

The LE 200 is not recommended for use with a stock camshaft, or with stock displacement engines, or engines under 2200cc unless extreme RPM is desired.

The LE  200 is acceptable for applications up to 2563cc that need strong usable power and exceptional torque.

The LE 200 has benefited from valve seat upgrades to eliminate dropped valve seats and related issues.

The LE 200 does NOT utilize the stock head gaskets as original. These heads are set up to eliminate issues with these gaskets, per the VW Bulletin released in 1981.

The LE 200 is THE original "Leading edge" cylinder head! This head was the first LE head to ever be effectively tested and implemented into our engine program, the LE 200 spawned many variants and opened up new doors that were never previously available without hours of hand work that racked up hundreds of dollars in added costs.

The LE 200 is the head of choice for our "Performer" engine offerings. This head works exceptionally well on our 2270 and 2316cc Performer engines. It also provides incredible torque when coupled to our 2374cc engine for some applications. The LE 200 is available in the limited edition "Type 4 Torquer" engine kit as well. This engine kit is a 100% carbon copy of the 170 HP engine with 180 lb/ft of torque that I built for Hot VWs in mid 2006. The performance of this engine speaks volumes for the LE 200 head combination as the "Type 4 Torquer" produced more torque and HP than any previous 2270 combination that we have ever created to run on pump gas, for full street conditions! The "Type 4 Torquer" produced a whopping 147HP and 157 lb/ft of torque AT THE REAR WHEELS, these figures surpass the figures that previous versions of our 2270 have created at the flywheel, without the 20% drive train losses seen at the rear wheels!

For enthusiasts going for bigger bore engines the LE 200 is also available for bore sizes up to 102mm for an additional expense. The LE 200 provides enough flow for limited RPM  street engines up to 2.5 liters. enthusiasts that appreciate the benefits of torque, more than Hp will certainly love the RPM range the big bore gives with the flow characteristics of the LE 200.

These heads feature the 2.0 Porsche combustion chambers, relocated spark plugs and a full 200 CFM intake port! The LE 200 gives exceptional throttle response with very cool running temperatures when used with most combinations. The LE 200 loves compression, we have used up to 10:1 CR with these heads and ran the engine on 91 octane fuel!

The LE 200 head comes with dual valve springs to provide better control for the valves as the port flow of these heads make exceptional RPM a capability when used with some smaller engine combinations.

The LE 200 also comes with our proprietary HAM/RAT phenolic intake spacers/gaskets. These are mandatory to allow the level of intake porting needed to achieve 200CFM flow, they also provide superior thermal capabilities and block cylinder head heat from traveling up the intake runner to the carburetor or throttle body! Hot running carburetors lead to elevated fuel temperatures which effects the efficiency of the fuel's atomization. We have noted up to 40 degree reductions in carburetor temperature when these spacers are utilized over conventional paper or bakelite gaskets. These gaskets also never wear out and can be reused over and over again for years.

All LE 200 heads come with port matched manifolds!!!

All performance cylinder heads are dependant upon camshaft selection to determine critical, proper operation and maximum efficiency with the best tuning.  Please see our camshaft pages for more info on selecting a camshaft to unlock more power and better drivability with cooler operating temperatures for your engine.

As with all of our cylinder heads the LE 200 receives the best components and labor that can be supplied. All our cylinder heads feature updated valve seats, guides, springs and retainers and are sold 100% complete and ready to install onto your Type 4 engine. Please note that rocker arm assemblies and valve covers are not supplied with our cylinder heads, but they are available separately through our retail store.
