Tangerine Racing ready for the 2005 SCCA
National Run Offs!
In 1995 I began road racing my Tangerine 914 with the SCCA after finishing a major chassis rust restoration. I completed more than 30 races in two years in Improved Touring B and in 1997 converted the car to Production category specifications. After winning 3 Regional Championships in 5 years I decided to go National Championship racing to push my skills to the limit. The 2003 season included a National Race win in the rain, and a Regional Race win, both at Lime Rock Park. On my first outing to the SCCA Runoffs at Mid-Ohio, I achieved a 14th place finish in the F Production race, from 21st starting position. A serious crash at the end of 2003 meant the car required major chassis repairs and bodywork. I took this as an opportunity to modify the rear suspension and the car made its return to the track in late July 2004. The team managed to attend and finish 4 Nationals in 5 weeks and Tangerine Racing was again invited to the National Runoffs. The result was a 15th place finish after qualifying 23rd. A week later we returned to the 1.53 mile track at Lime Rock and the NARRC Runoffs. My goal was to set a personal best lap at the track where I have logged well over 10,000 miles but had not improved my best lap time of 1:03.1 since 1998. In convincing fashion I qualified second overall and ran race laps in the 1:01s to finish 1st in class and 3rd overall, less than 5 seconds behind the overall winner. Until now I was content to build my own engines. Concentrating on reliability over performance I have achieved moderate success with limited skills. The time has come to reach for the brass ring, so to speak, so I am turning to Jake Raby for his expertise and dedication in building Type 4 engines. With a fully prepared race engine from Aircooled Technology I can concentrate on the chassis setup and my driving, and have confidence that the car will be fast enough to bring home the National wins.
