For many years the most difficult vehicle to convert to TIV power has been the 68-71 Type II... Ironically these are the vehicles that need the robust design of the far superior TIV engine foundation the most.
The most difficult part of the conversion has always been finding a mounting solution for the engine that will support both the weight and torsion of the Type 4 engine and EASILY integrate into the Bus chassis. Wait no more, the solution has arrived.
The mount bar that we have made is a virtual bolt in using all VW and Porsche parts. The units are made from thick wall box tubing and each are fully tig welded with internal supports at the engine mount locations for strength. This is a component that is 100% MADE IN THE USA by hand!
Each unit is built in a jig that was designed from the actual mount bar that is in service in my personal 1968 TII Double Cab, so we know that each unit fits perfectly and integrates into the chassis as a BOLT IN arrangement using the FACTORY
Type II mounting positions for the factory "Mustache Bar".
For better pictures and a description of the mount bar, check out this thread on The Samba. This is the build thread for my 68 Double Cab.
What else is needed?
-Type 4 engine of any size, excluding a CV case from a Vanagon.
-One pair of Porsche 914 engine mount pads (also available at the Type 4 Store).
-One pair of Porsche 914 engine mounts (Rubber, and also available separately from the Type 4 Store or many other vendors).
- DTM upright conversion kit (The unit was developed to work with the DTM kit, add $150.00 to the price of any DTM kit to include this mount bar.
-Exhaust, ignition and induction subsystems.
-Flywheel and clutch arrangement suitable for the transaxle that's employed in your Type II (we can help you select).
The price of the mount bar is $179.00 or it can be added to any stage of DTM kit for $150.00 more.
