914 2270cc Daily
Driver
Don’t be fooled by other shops and their “Horsepower claims”… The 914 needs torque and this engine has gobs of that! Do you want POWER? Reliability? Longevity? Hardly any maintenance? The capability of taking long trips at higher speeds? This is the “Aircooled Technology” "Daily Driver-Torque Special" base engine. This engine is the beginning point of where our development with engine combinations really starts to be evident. This engine has tremendous torque at low RPM and due to this makes all its power by 5,500 RPM!! The drivability of this engine is incredible on the street in everyday driving, as well as on the track. This engine was one of our first efforts with the 2270 combination and has been refined for the past few years with a few new developments to add durability and reliability/longevity, but basically has remained the same otherwise. Since the engine is only bored 2mm the longevity is superb and our stronger, lighter components that comprise it also help with longevity. A few years ago we decided to work harder to make the medium displacement engine the wave of the future through efficiency. The base of this was the 2270 version of engines and the results of our efforts have been astonishing with this particular combination. The super strong point with this engine is that it thrives from high intake velocities and does so with basically a set of specially prepared heads that are based from the 2.0 914 casting, but do NOT feature any port work. This is not an everyday type of combination and is made possible with a custom ground camshaft that features a healthy dose of lift with a healthy dose of split duration on the exhaust profile. I actually happened upon this combination due to a head porter not getting me a set of heads on time for a race engine and I was forced to use my personal stock heads to get the racer to the track that weekend. When we tested the engine I was amazed and created this as a base engine based solely from those results and incredible efficiency that I noted as soon as I dropped the hammer on the dyno!! The engine runs head temperatures COOLER than stock, and literally produces enough power to break your tires loose up into 3rd gear with the stock 901 tranny! I have many of these engines that see 100% daily usage and as much as 20,000 miles per year and they even see track time as well. The great idle characteristic of this engine and its extreme friendliness in the lower RPM range makes it easy to drive for anyone. Its extreme torque being made at 3500RPM creates a vehicle that can actually handle better and reacts well to throttle steering should the need arise to give it a try in the twisties. The powerband of this engine with its gobs of torque definitely compliments stock, full bodied 914s that need tons of torque to get rolling. That’s no challenge for this engine as it gets up and rolling with smoke boiling from the tires if the driver so desires. Power is smooth, but on demand. Torque is flat and easily found with the depression of the accelerator pedal. Rolling on the throttle in 3rd gear is an awesome experience as you progress through the revs to the point where the torque falls off and HP takes over. When the peak HP mark is achieved- grab another gear and do it all over again! Due to our extreme amount of experience with this combination I have various stages of set up for this base engine including one that’s made for sea level, all the way up to elevations of 10,000 or more feet with all types of climates in between. I can literally make this engine work anywhere! We have them all over the world! This engine, coupled with a set of Weber 44mm carburetors is a serious contender and has the capability of outperforming by leaps and bounds a stock 914/6 as well as many other six cylinder converted cars while staying simple, easy to work on and much cheaper. This is a great choice for those who have less money to spend, but want more power than the 2056 series of engines has to offer. Remember that the stock 914/6 only made 110HP@5800 and 116@4200 TQ. Our small, slightly tuned 4 cylinder annihilates that at 141 BHP and 161 lb/ft of torque! There is nothing better than a daily driver 4 that can drive to the track, beat the sixes and drive home without breaking! We have done this on MANY occasions! It is a true “Dual purpose” 914 engine that was designed to provide solid crisp power with a flat torque curve and to do so at a lower RPM to decrease wear from turning high RPM. This engine can be further outfitted with our newest developments and options and even more longevity than the 100,000 miles we normally see can be achieved. The engine burns normal pump gas, idles smooth and sounds incredible in the driver’s seat! With our 9:1 static compression ratio we retain long life, cool temperatures and the need for a better cooling system, like our 914 “DTM” is not needed, however if it is used the engine will produce more HP through better efficiency. With our dyno tuning you can rest assured that the engine will arrive in the best state of tune possible and producing its peak amount of power with its best settings for the desired RPM. I have had customers brag about this engine so often that at one time we built 6 of them in one year for the members of just one Porsche club! Each of these engines is balanced much better than stock to a tolerance of “Intermediate”, and benefits from all the same procedures as our larger more powerful engines, even dyno tuning. This engine is best if built from a customer’s 2.0 core, but we can start with any core, or even supply a core if need be. The cylinder head profiles we have developed for this engine are only compatible with the 2.0 914 spec cylinder head casting, that’s why your core being a 2.0 is so important. I consider this engine to be in the top 5% of what we create here, its simple, its more affordable and it doesn’t need crazy RPM to let you know that your 914/4 can spank the ass off of a 914/6- even at the track. I highly recommend this engine for the torque crowd, and it really shines at the autocross track as well as the road course. It doesn’t break, it doesn’t leak oil- It’s typically MassIVe and we are proud to sign our names to this one about 20 times per year! It takes a lot to satisfy my desire for power, but this engine totally amazes me over and over again! NOTE:This engine IS NOT compatible with the stock EFI system! It is designed as a base for those who want to add our Aftermarket EFI system to their engine, or outfit it with carburetors. We have a base version of this engine for each of these methods of fuel delivery. Below is an excerpt from a customer who has one of these particular engines with Weber 44mm IDF carburetors: “I purchased a 1973 Porsche 914 a few
years ago. After participating in a couple of DE events I decided that
my 1.7 engine wasn't enough. I researched every engine builder that I
could find for about 6 months and found that Raby's Aircooled Technology
was, without question, the company that I wanted to build my engine. -Rick Hurd
